Welcome to My World

I love Lehigh Valley IronPigs baseball. I’ve been a season ticket-holder since the first game in 2008 with the Philadelphia Phillies. I miss very few games during the course of the season (more than usual this year because of the ridiculous weather, unfortunately).

There’s not a more beautiful ballpark in Minor League Baseball than Coca-Cola Park. There’s no finer front office staff in MiLB than the IronPigs’ nor are there friendlier seasonal employees. And each year, I am privileged to watch a collection of men of varying ages, interests, abilities and ethnicities come together and play as a team. Folks, that’s what it’s all about and that’s why the IronPigs are the hottest entertainment venue in the Valley these days.

I’ve always had opinions about everything. Just ask my wife; she’ll tell you. Baseball is no different. I see things — some things that I like, some things that I don’t. I also try to see the future as I want it to be. Welcome to My World is how I vent, how I praise, how I dream about IronPigs and Phillies baseball. What it isn’t is a daily play-by-play regurgitation of last night’s game. Sure, I may talk about last night’s game, but only in the context of the issue I’m venting about. So even though I’ll be posting frequently, don’t look for my blog every day, or after every IronPigs home game.

The way I look at it, Welcome to My World is really the start of a conversation with my readers. I want to hear what you have to say about the issues I bring up. I want your ideas, opinions, hopes and dreams. Let’s give Reuben some other perspectives to think about!

Awesome blog! Do you have any suggestions for aspiring writers?
I’m hoping to start my own website soon but I’m a little lost on everything.
Would you suggest starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option?
There are so many options out there that I’m completely confused .. Any suggestions? Bless you!

Thanks, glad you like it! If you’re an aspiring writer, my first suggestion would be to get as much real-world experience as you can. Do you have a journalism degree? If so, try to get a job on a newspaper that specializes in local news. There’s no better way to get your feet wet. No degree but have other writing training? Try one of the weekly papers in your area/region. They’re always looking for help covering meetings and sports events. And yes, start a blog. I wouldn’t pay for it, when WordPress is absolutely free. Just make sure you write on timely subjects, about something you know well, and get the word out. The last is very important. You have to be your own promoter. Use the tools WordPress gives you to promote your blog, but also make sure your friends know about it and spread the word around for you. Of course, none of this means diddly-squat if what you’re writing isn’t well-written or interesting. Good luck! P.S. I worked in newspapers for 26 years, doing every job in the newsroom including Editor-in-Chief, and am now disabled/retired. I do this because I enjoy it, not because I’m looking to make a name for myself or get a good job, so I don’t really care if people read it or not. So I want you to understand that I’m not practicing what I’m preaching to you!

Thanks! Obviously it’s a difficult topic to sustain in the off-season, and I’ve been remiss in picking it up again in 2014. Now that we’re already into June, perhaps it’s time I kicked myself in the butt and got back to it, eh?
